The Project
When one of Perth’s best-known pubs wanted to make more of its outdoor area, the brief was simple: give patrons a space they can use in any weather. We delivered 160m² of opening louvre roof across eight bays, turning the beer garden into an all-season entertaining space.
The courtyard’s centrepiece is a mature tree the venue was determined to keep, so the louvre roof had to be built around it rather than over it. On top of that the space included angled and tapered sections that needed to follow the existing layout, plus several wide openings where the venue wanted clear, uninterrupted space below with no extra posts getting in the way of tables, foot traffic or sightlines.
The Solution
Working with the architect we broke the area into eight bays, laid out to frame the tree and keep it as the courtyard’s focal point. The angled and tapered bays were custom fitted to follow the shape of the courtyard running parallel with the Albany Highway, so the roof looks like it was always meant to be there.
For the wider spans we used the Exo Shade Max blade, which can span up to 5.1 metres. Longer blades mean fewer bays, posts, beams and motors, giving the venue a cleaner, more open feel underneath.
The Outcome
The Broken Hill Hotel now has a fully operable roof across its outdoor area. Staff can open it for sun and breeze on a good day or close it for shade and rain protection when the weather turns. With a rain sensor fitted, the roof closes automatically when the rain starts, so nobody has to keep an eye on the sky. More usable days outdoors means more trade, whatever the forecast.
